Rising water bills put further pressure on households in the East Midlands

Labour is urging the Government to ensure that householders are given help with rising water bills following the news today that charges are set to rise, putting even more pressure on the household budgets of people here in the East Midlands.

Figures released show that the average water bill for residents served by Severn Trent will increase by 5% and those households served by Anglian Water will rise by 5.4%.

Mary Creagh MP, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, in response to the announcement, commented:

"The Tory-led Government are out of touch with families facing higher water bills, rising living costs and falling household income. With bills set to rise by as much as 8 per cent, consumers deserve to know exactly where their money is going. The Government must ensure that water companies help the growing number of people in water debt and sign up more households to special tariffs to ensure they can meet their payments."
