Labour Candidate’s plea over decision on Thoresby Colliery

Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Sherwood Léonie Mathers has made a last minute plea to the Government’s Business Secretary ahead of a crucial decision on the future of Thoresby Colliery in Edwinstowe.

The Government has promised to make a decision on the State Aid application before Parliament rises for the election period.

UK Coal has faced financial difficulties over the past year and has appealed to the Government for short-term financial support.

The Government has repeatedly delayed UK Coal from even submitting the application, pushing up the cost of saving the last deep coal mines in the country.

However, in last week’s budget, George Osborne announced a £1.3bn package of support for the offshore oil and gas industry, to help the industry survive a global downturn in the price of oil and gas.

Parliament sits tomorrow for the last time, ahead of the General Election in May.
