Léonie Mathers, Labour’s PPC for Sherwood, responding to the Government’s announcement on Thoresby Colliery, said: "The Government's decision not to support state aid for Thoresby Colliery is devastating news for hundreds of skilled men and women set to lose their jobs in the coming months.
"For a whole year we've been asking Mark Spencer's Government to step in before it's too late, but Ministers have instead put obstacles in the way at every turn. With every week that has passed, the deliberate dithering and distractions have pushed up the cost of investment, meaning the latest estimate was almost five times the original ask.
"They've kept us hanging on for this news, but today - on the last day of this Tory Government - we've been handed the final nail in the coffin of the British Coal industry with the confirmation of £10m to shut down the pits.
"It's a bitter end to a Government which has been more Thatcherite than Margaret Thatcher and has turned its back on our communities."
