Cheryl Pidgeon selected as Labour's candidate for Erewash
The Labour Party has tonight announced that Cheryl Pidgeon has been selected by local party members as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Erewash.
Cheryl will hope to follow in the footsteps of current MP, Liz Blackman, who announced that she was standing down in January after serving 13 years in Parliament.
Following the announcement, Cheryl said: "I am incredibly honoured to have been selected by Erewash members as their prospective parliamentary candidate. Liz has been an extremely hard working local MP and will definitely be a hard act to follow, but it is a role that I relish.
"During the recent economic global recession it has been Labour that has taken the right action to protect people's homes and jobs and now we are starting to see the first signs of recovery. But we cannot be complacent, I know that there is still more to be done and I am determined to stand up for the people of Erewash.
"I am now looking forward to getting out there and talking to local people about their priorities for the future of Erewash and will be campaigning to retain the seat for Labour at the General Election.
"Local people here in Erewash will face a big choice at this year's election. A choice between a Labour Government that is committed to creating a future that is fair for all and a Conservative Government that offer the wrong kind of change - a change that people here in Erewash can't afford."
Current MP, Liz Blackman said: "I have known Cheryl for a long time and I know that she will be an excellent candidate and MP and she can rely on my 100% support."
Jon Hemsley, Chair of Erewash CLP, said: "The members in Erewash have had three excellent candidates to choose from and I would like to congratulate Cheryl on becoming our new candidate.
"Erewash Constituency Labour Party is looking forward to working with Cheryl in retaining the seat for Labour at the next General Election."
