ASHFIELD MP HIGHLIGHTS GOVERNMENT’S BROKEN PROMISE TO PROTECT LOW-PAID

Labour's Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero has forced the Government to come clean on details of the public sector pay freeze.

Ministers had claimed in the Budget that public servants earning less than £21,000 would be spared the two year pay freeze. But under questioning from Gloria De Piero, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander admitted that part time workers earning under £21,000 would also be hit if their equivalent full time salary would be over the limit.

Speaking after the Government’s disclosure, Gloria said, "This will mean huge numbers of low-paid public sector workers - many of them women - will miss out on the protection George Osborne pretended to offer them.

"It is an underhand stealth cut which he made no mention of in the Budget.

"The aim of the coalition is not to look after the low-paid but squeeze as much out of the public sector as possible. The reason is because they have never had to rely on front-line public services."
